The African Teke mask originates from the upper Ogowe region in Democratic Republic of Congo and Gabon. The Teke face mask is a round moon-shaped disk worn by members of the Kiduma – a secret society that takes charge of social celebrations and events. The Kidumu society wear Teke masks during funerals of chiefs, weddings, or important meetings. The mask is held in place with a bite bar at the back, which the wearer holds with his teeth while dancing.
